From Kansas City to St. Louis and beyond – if you drive, ignorance about Missouri car insurance is not an acceptable excuse. Take time to familiarize yourself about insurance regulations for your car, truck, or SUV.

It is mandatory in the great state of Missouri to have motorist liability insurance. Without exception, you must have $25, 000 liability insurance against injury, a minimum of $50, 000 to protect you against bodily injury and at least $10, 000 coverage for property. Further, you should have $25, 000 to $50, 000 uninsured motors coverage should you be involved in a crash with someone less responsible than yourself. Once you have the correct amount of coverage you can proceed to the registration office.

When you purchase your tags and register your vehicle, you must provide evidence of insurance or financial responsibility thereto. What this means is that you should have your policy or your receipt of policy in hand with proof of motor vehicle liability insurance. You can bring the ID card issued by your insurance company. If you are a fleet owner with 25 or more vehicles, you may have a self-insured or financial responsibility ID card that was issued to you by the Department of Revenue (DOR) in Missouri.

There are other options for motorists in Missouri in regards to insurance. You can put up a surety bond or Certificate of Deposit with the Department of Revenue for at least $60, 000.

Should you be visiting Missouri and rent a car, truck or SUV, there must be insurance on the vehicle. Rental companies will offer you coverage for $7 to $14 a day over and above the cost of your rental. Check your insurance coverage on your personal vehicles and see if there’s provision for rental companies. Many of the country’s top credit card companies offer vehicle insurance as part of their value added services. If this service is offered to you, you can refuse the additional coverage offered by the car rental company.

Missouri does not operate on a no-fault insurance system. Someone must be assigned fault under the Tort system that Missouri follows. The individual deemed to be at fault is responsible for all damages incurred. It can be difficult when you are found at fault, especially if you’ve rear-ended someone who slammed on the brakes abruptly. That is why many insurance companies will offer you the opportunity to purchase additional coverage, over and above the minimum.

There are always those people who try to get away without purchasing insurance. If you’re stopped by the police and can not produce proof of insurance, you’ll be issued a ticket. You may have your license suspended. If you’re caught more than once, your license will be suspended for up to a year, it will cost you between $200 and $400 to have your license re-instated.

From Kansas City to St. Louis and beyond – if you drive, ignorance about Missouri car insurance is not an acceptable excuse. Take time to familiarise yourself about insurance regulations for your car, truck, or SUV and save loads on especially Ohio insurance premiums.
